Create a Group

Setting up a group is a great opportunity. You gain friends, skills and experience which can help improve your time as a student and it is also valuable for life after university. And it couldn’t be an easier process!

Are you setting up a club or a society?

Let's start by saying that the process is slightly different depending on whether you're looking to set up a new club or a new society.

Setting up a new club

How to apply

Email [email protected]. Once you’ve gotten in contact with us, we can advise you on the best route to take to start your new sport.

This may differ depending on the activity, and if it’s something that we have run in the past. In most cases, we will ask you to fill out an application form. This form will help establish the aims of the club (for example, if it’s competitive or just casual) and help give us an idea of the costs that may be associated with running the club.

What happens next?

Once you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by the staff team, and then presented to the monthly Sports Federation Forum, where the application will get voted on by the current sports leaders.

Once the application is accepted you will be given a Union email address, a page on the Southbank SU Website, and full training on how to run a Sports Club at the Union. This training will cover the basics of leadership, budgeting, marketing, growing your membership, and other practical information you will need.

Setting up a new society

How to apply

To apply to start your own society, you'll need to fill out the application form during the application windows each semester.

Application dates for academic year 2021/22: TBC.

What happens next?

Your application will be reviewed by the SU Opportunities Team, and they will get in touch with you if they need any further information.

Your society will need to be approved by a vote at the next Societies Guild Forum. This is a Forum of all current student group leaders, which exists to represent all South Bank SU student groups.

Once you have submitted your application, the SU Opportunities Team will get in touch with further details of how this vote will take place.

If your application is successful, you will then be provided with full training on how to run a society which will cover the basics of leadership, budgeting, marketing, growing your membership, and other practical information.

What if I get stuck?
